Advent at St Mary's

Come back each day in Advent for a new post, or find us on Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter to have it delievered directly to you!

Day 20

Today we asked some of our church family why you should bother looking into Christianity if you wouldn't call yourself a Christian.

If you'd like the chance to see what all these people are talking about, we are running a laid back course called Hope Explored over three Monday evenings in January. It's a cold and dark month, but Christians believe there is always hope - come along to see for yourself and ask any questions you have. For more info or to sign up click this link

Day 18

The waiting for Christmas is nearly over, only seven sleeps to go! What are we waiting for? Well, we find out when the angel tells the shepherds about a baby who is born. But this is no ordinary baby. And the angel says this baby is good news who will bring great joy for people. This baby sounds worth the wait!

Day 17

Make a sheep mask with Hannah to become part of the nativity yourself!

Day 16

How well do you know the true Christmas story? Find out by playing along on our social media stories where you can vote for the answer you think is right!

Day 15

It's only 10 days til Christmas! But don't worry, we've still got plenty happening over the next couple of weeks, If you fancy singing some classic carols then pop along to Carols by Candlelight this Sunday evening, or if you've got little ones do join us for Christingle or our Christmas Nativity Extravaganza - they're going to be great fun!

Day 14

Singing Christmas carols has to be one of the best things to do at Christmas! Carols by Candlelight, our traditional carol service is this Sunday at 7pm, don't miss it!

Day 13

At St Mary's we believe that the Bible is God's Word, so we think it is really important! This week, we asked some members of our church family what ONE Bible verse they think everyone should know.imageimageimageimageimageimage

Day 12

Yesterday Andrew reminded us that Christ is coming! And this Christ who is coming is the very same Jesus who died for us and rose again, in order that we might live with him. Therefore encourage one another and build each other up!

Day 11

Advent helps us look to the future and prepare for the second coming of Jesus. What are we waiting for? Well, when Jesus spoke about his future return, he said it would be some event! Everyone will know about it, the angels will come with him, and he will sit on his throne as King! Wow - that is worth waiting for!

Day 10

It’s time for our second advent craft! Join us in making an angel with wings that actually move! If you’d find it difficult to get hold of any of the materials please do stop by church

Day 9

We played a game on our social media accounts to see whether anyone could spot the parts of classic carols which aren't mentioned in the Bible's accounts of Christmas. Have a look below to see which songs we used, and see if you can figure out which lyrics might not be quite accurate!

Day 8

It's all happening! If you're coming to Carols by Twilight this weekend please do remember to wrap up warm. On that note, if you're in need of somewhere warm to be over the next few months do feel free to drop into St Mary's which will be open weekday mornings. There are free refreshments and spaces to chill, work and entertain children!

Day 7

Sometimes we like to change things up and not just go for the predictable ones - so here's the third verse from O Holy Night!

Day 6

Advent Day Six!

We have a pretty broad sweep of people in our church family, so we thought it would be nice to get to know a few of them better by asking a couple of questions!

This week's question is 'What's your favourite Christmas tradition?'

Day 5

Yesterday in church we heard some really important truths, so as we head into the new week, here's a reminder for you!

Day 4

What are we actually waiting for? What's the point of Advent? Well, the word advent means coming. It is a chance for Christians to prepare for the coming of
Jesus; both his first coming (that we celebrate at Christmas), and his second (future) coming. In Isaiah the people are waiting, waiting for the coming of the
Messiah, God’s chosen King. Isaiah says he will come, and in chapter 9 gives an insight into what, or who we’re waiting for. Look through for an explanation of
what each part means

Day 3

Looking for something fun for the kids, or just enjoy making things? Why not give our first Christmas craft a go? All you need to do is follow along with Hannah - and the best part is that we reckon you'll already have almost everything you need. To do all four crafts over the month, we think you'll need to pick up a stack of paper plates (poundland ones work just fine!), some hair coloured wool and a split pin or two. Catch the video on our Facebook or Instagram.

If for any reason you're unable to access sone of the craft materials, please do swing by St Mary's when our Winter Warm Space is open (Monday-Friday, 9:30am-12pm) and we'll be happy to provide you with whatever you need.

Day 2

Who doesn't love a new phone wallpaper?! Download one of these to use as a lock screen or home screen and be reminded that Jesus is good news of great joy for all people this year (and every year!)
